1915. War is an unknown land into which Justin—a humble peasant—is thrust at the very moment he should be tending his fields. He is forced to go and fight, bound by a law he does not understand and facing an enemy he has never seen, all while dreaming only of staying on his farm.

His encounter with Basile, a Senegalese skirmisher, opens his eyes to the reality of a war that baffles him. Together, they rebel against the injustices of an absurd military command and become an unlikely kind of hero.
